Michael,
I am a heavy user of KVM on Ubuntu. IMHO it is the future of
virtualization. We use it for all server virtualization, and I use it
on my desktops and laptops for virtualization as well. The other
products mentioned to you will work well also - it really depends on
your goals.
VMWare just released ESXi for free (as in price), but this will only be
useful if you plan on running 'headless'. But it sounds like you are
needing to run this on a workstation, where you will be working on other
things besides virtualization. If you need to use it on a 'desktop'
computer, where you will be working on other apps as well, KVM and
Virtual Box are excellent. VMWare Server (I know it says server, but
it'll work fine) is also good. I'd stay away from MS Virtual PC (it is
slick looking though) for performance reasons.
You didn't mention what OS you would be running on the host? If you
think you are going to go with KVM, I've written up some hopefully
helpful information on it at bitbud.com.
