[itdiscuss] Online Backups

Remote Backup Service - $500-$thousands
Remote backup bandwidth speed - slow
Here is an idea for offsite backups: Buddy System - You setup your backup
server at my location and remote backup to it every day, and I do the same
at your location... I have no traffic here at the church from midnight to
5:00am. Bandwidth - all available. Seperate network using firewall. Remote
access into box. You install your own backup software, encryption, etc.

I am looking for opinions/recommendations for online backup systems.
I've looked at MozyPro but have heard that there are bandwidth issues.
I need backup abilities for Exchange and SQL...

Thanks!

A customer of mine for used US LEC years with no problem at all. Great
service only two outages in about 3 years, and they called to tell us both
times one was a fiber cut/not their fault. Since Paetec bought USLEC, their
customer service, technical support, and billing and everything about them
has been a complete disaster. I changed the customers firewall once, and
called Paetec to do an ARP cache reset on the Paetec managed router, and
Paetec support argued that we weren't even valid customers, despite the fact
that I called the number on the sticker on the router, and gave them the
circuit ID, so we just unplugged the router and let the lack of electricity
clear out the arp cache. This customer left them last month to roll the
dice with Nuvox.

I also used Paetec with another large customer which had several circuits
with them, and had experienced adequate tech support. I did not deal
billing or other aspects of the account.

I suspect Paetec didn't do a good job integrating USLEC customers into their
systems.

I'm interested to hear the opinions of others on this.

I am looking into Paetec VOIP solutions. Does anyone have Paetec for your
solution? If so, please comment on your overall experience, as well as
Paetec Contact information, please. We currently have Paetec for our T1's,
BellSouth for our 4 dedicated lines, and Intertel for our phone equipment
and system.

I just installed a firewall built for schools called K12USA and it
automatically intercepts most of the big search engine urls in the proxy and
adds the appropriate safesearch language to the final URL submitted to the
search engine.? Very cool!
I don't think there is an easy way to do determine what is explicit or not
on Youtube.? They definitely will think something is fine and we would be
very offended by it.? It has to be an all or nothing proposition.? If they
really need it for the work of the Church then maybe it is only allowed for
those people that have to have it.? Although, I'm trying to figure out why
they would need it!?!
YBIC,
Jason

?

Does anyone know how to setup Google SafeSearch in either Firefox or IE so
that it automatically defaults to strict filtering for all searches?

?

Along these same veins, how do you handle YouTube videos? What they consider
?explicit? is a bit beyond what my users consider explicit?

?

Many thanks.

Scott!
Take a look at http://freenas.org. You can throw a bunch of drives into
an old PC, and backup to this system using RSsync or RoboCopy.

If you are looking for a more complete backup solution, take a look at
Amanda backup http://amanda.zmanda.com. You could use that in
conjunction with FreeNas as well.

We should try to organize a Bay Area Round Table sometime. Derek Berg
is another one that is (somewhat) local in Bradenton.

I've been testing online backups from https://www.egnyte.com/. It has
a few nice features beyond what MozyPro has. But, similar to Mozy,
I've been running into 128KB upload bandwidth limits for backups,
which makes it a pain to use.

How much data are you needing to back up? If anyone wants I can get you
pricing on our Tereo backup service. We typically limit to 512Mbps for
anyone with a plan larger than 5GB, and go all the way to Unlimited for
anyone with more than 25GB storage. Unlimited will usually mean "as much as
you can send" since I doubt you could match our bandwidth.'
