[itdiscuss] Exchange With Unix/Linux

I'm one who prefers to live in (Ubuntu) Linux ;) at home and at work.

Friends don't let friends use Window Servers directly on the Internet since they will be compromised within a day. Even if you keep up with the myriad of "security patches".

Sendmail SMTP has no problem interacting with Exchange. I actually let Linux do all of the email heavy lifting. I have incoming email get filtered by Barracuda, Linux / Sendmail / MIMEDefang / Spamassassin, then it goes to Exchange. I actually do all of the antivirus scanning on Linux and Barracuda to alieviate that burden from Exchange as well (and I think the A/V scanning is a big burden for the server). I also check multiple real-time black-list servers (RBLs) from Sendmail as well.

I have outgoing email dump everything to a Linux / Sendmail on the LAN which makes everything secure for Exchange and makes email delivery very easy and fast, and it doesn't directly access the Internet (which also goes through a Watchguard Firewall).

It works flawlessly. Sendmail batches the email deliveries by domain and very quickly gets all of the email out. You can throw thousands of outgoing email from Exchange with this setup and both Exchange and Sendmail Linux Gateway won't even break a sweat.

A Linux Gateway(s) also creates great email I/O logs on the Linux mail.log files for researching what happened to you emails..

I think I told exchange that my gateway Linux email server was the smart-host so anything it can't deliver locally gets sent to Linux. I have all but the gateway Linux email servers set the Exchange server as their smart-host.

As far as clients, I prefer to use a termserver client (namely gnome-rdp) and have a windows window with Outlook in it.

The gnome-rdp does a good job of copy / paste from the Linux buffer. Also gnome-rdp let's you put vnc and ssh servers to choose from in addition to your rdp servers..

Subject: Exchange With Unix/Linux

At my day job we're being pushed to move away from a highly customized
sendmail environment to Exchange. Our biggest hesitation is that we
have about 1/3 of our users using Linux desktops/laptops and have
hundreds of servers running Linux or Unix that need to interact with email.

Any tips on transitioning linux systems into a new Exchange environment?
I'm looking for more than simply input on linux mail clients that are
compatible with Exchange. I'm needing more input on users who like to
live on a linux command line and for the *nix servers themselves
interacting with Exchange.
