Not sure how helpful this will be, but perhaps it will work better if you create an ISO of the CD, and reference the ISO instead of the CD to boot the guest.

I downloaded this last night and attempted to bring it up on a brand
new, never been run, well-endowed Dell 2950 (no SAN).  First off, the
documentation leaves a little to be desired for a newcomer.  After a
couple of hours of fiddling with it, I was able to get it up and running
and using the VMWare Infrastructure Client.  And a few minutes latter I
had a vm sitting inside the client.  My problem is that I can't get the
vm to boot to the CD so I can load the OS.  I have been through the dox
and the client help.  Maybe I missed something.  Does anybody out there
have any suggestions.
