My son in law's dad is a pilot and he has been barnstorming around
Alaska for the past 3 or 4 summers. He did have a Sat. phone but this
year he bought something called SPOT. The web site is
http://international.findmespot.com/
<http://international.findmespot.com/> and it's pretty cool. You can't
check in directly but you have 4 levels of communication including one
that tracks exactly where the SPOT device is on Google Earth, and one
that says send help to my exact location.
The device costs about $200 and the service is 100 per year.

Actually I hadn't looked at this due to assumptions about the cost (I
know, don't assumeJ). I hadn't thought of rental, I'll look.

Steve,
Have you looked at sat phones? The price to purchase and rental has come
down significantly and many now include unlimited inbound calling...
(but good luck getting a local number for the caller).
We explored this about a year ago and had thought about forwarding an
800 number to a sat phone....
Obviously, we didn't proceed so it had some concerns.

We are looking for the best way to keep in contact with our various
mission trips. Skype work great as long as the trip is somewhere with
Internet access, however what about the areas that are not. What Cell
phone would you recommend for international use (if they can get cell)
or other options. We are looking at probably a single option that could
be shared by each trip. It would be very rare to have trips overlap that
did not have Internet access.
Also, would you have recommendation for the best portable web cam &
microphone for Skype for use on their laptops.
Any thought appreciated. An example of no Internet service is a remote
village in Peru.
