I have seen this before; but it was with XP not Vista.  My guess is that
you are using IE to access the mail and that some ActiveX control is
conflicting with the webmail site.  If that is the case, you can go into
Options and select the option to download the S/MIME control.

 

We use a donor management program from Blackbaud.  Once installed, the
client was unable to use IE to send Email; they could read it but the
rich textbox for editing was not available (red X).  Installing the
S/MIME controls corrected this.

I have a problem getting Vista to allow us to edit email
messages/replies in Vista.   The email window will pop open but the
editing box below just has a red x in the far left hand corner.  I am
sure it is one small setting, but which one among thousands is the
question.  Any ideas?
