Bill, I've done this several times before.  It can be a bit tricky if you
don't read through all the documentation, but Samba has some examples on
their site that walk you through the process.

 There
are GUI's available for various tasks.  Basically, you get all the
functionality of a Windows NT 4 PDC.  No Active Directory as of yet.  But
you can use NT 4 tools for managing users and groups.  You can also setup
system policies, though no group policies.Samba is working on version 4
which is supposed to give you Active Directory, but it's still in alpha
stage.  They claim what is finished is stable, it's just all the features
