Ditto on OpenDNS. Been using it for a couple of years now and its been great.
It CAN be gotten around by hardsetting dns servers away from the opendns servers.. so you will want to add firewall rules to restrict that.
I know you said you want to stay away from having a proxy, but squid and dansguardian is also a great inexpensive content filtering solution. And if you have some cycles spare on a vmware server there are prebuilt vmware images available.

Subject: [itdiscuss] Content Filtering
Folks,
It is time for our Content Filtering renewal. I am looking into various options, since prices have gone up on our current subscription (SonicWall). What do you use? What do you like/dislike about it?
Is anyone using the Barracuda Content Filter? Websense (Express)?
I want to accomplish two things:
* Keep things secure for our elementary school
* Avoid having a proxy server
Thanks for your thoughts!
