[itdiscuss] Vista to XP

Took the words right out of my mouth there, Ken.

I find that a lot of people (including IT managers) don't understand that these ISV's (printer manufacturers too) have access to certain code releases and framework documentation often "years" in advanced to the release of an OS. There is simply no excuse for them to be dragging their feet and I let them know via my buying power. If they don't keep up with technology, than I won't purchase their equipment and this happened with Vista. We switched copiers/printer manufacturers (they were up on lease anyways and were due to be replaced) and this was a good portion of the decision making process.

As for drivers, as I've never had a WHQL certified print driver fail or crash the print spooler. I'm not saying it couldn't, just my experience is that certified drivers are pretty rock solid. In the print driver area, WHQL drivers indicate that the driver is loaded in user mode as opposed to kernel mode so it doesn't do anything too bad. Believe it or not, vendors still make print drivers that run in kernel mode...

I wouldn't worry too much about Win7 if you're network is running Windows Vista...not much architecturally is changed. From Windows XP will be a different story though.

MTW has done the same - moving to 64 bit too.

Our solution for the few Vista machines was to bring online a new Print server and use it rather than the old print server for all Vista clients...

Vista 64bit print drivers on a 2008 64bit server are a breeze compared to trying support those on a 2003 server...

After that adding the XP 32 and 64 bit drivers are much easier too.

Those darned printing issues! We too have had them AND it has kept us from deploying until we can get a stable printing/OS infrastructure for Vista we'll still not switch. We do have a few stalwarts who've transitioned but I'd really like to have Microsoft make sure that things don't break in such a big way. I've had two support organizations review the situation and have been able to come to no resolution. Vista print drivers on Win2k3 print servers for Vista clients just have been a pain.

And... here comes 7! I'm testing as well. First machine hasn't fared as well as some have indicated. IBM Thinkpad R50. Many issues with subsystems drivers. Primary systems OK.

We've done it. Usually the best way to go is to wipe the hard drive and do a fresh install of XP using the drivers from Dell's web site.

But I'll agree with Jason that Vista is an improvement except with some printing issues that can me worked around.

Has anyone attempted to retrograde a Vista install to XP? I have four Vista computers that were purchased before Dell offered the "buy Vista/ship XP" deals. The users are fed up with Vista.
