I agree with all of this except the password-protected zip.  3 years ago that would have been great, but so many viruses came out through password-protected archives that many spam filters (I know the barracuda does it) block them by default.  Stupid spammers ruin everything.

I know that there are expensive corporate solutions for this that cater to high-profile and high-risk needs.  But in the context of most of the people on this discussion board (churches and non-profits), I would imagine that you are looking for an easy and inexpensive solution.  Two things come to mind.  First, you could simply have your users Zip the documents into a password protected zip file.  There's tons of free solutions that provide for that.  And if you need higher degrees of protection, you could look into PGP which handles the encrypting of files as well as providing personal digital email certificates.

We have been asked to research options.  I'd like to not re-invent the wheel if at all possible.
