Darin,
Why don't you look into Microsoft's Steady State. It's free and could
be used as a roll-back point while still allowing user to install
software:

Subject: [itdiscuss] Question about big picture of IT at churches
This might sound just absurd to some of you, but this is where we're at.
Currently at our church, we have one primary domain controller. We use
active directory mainly for file sharing and permissions (and the
convenience of people being able to log on at different workstations).
We use Google Apps for email (got rid of Exchange). We probably have
roughly 10 Macs, 30 Windows workstations, and 20 or so Windows laptops.
There are about 10 network printers as well.
I'm going to be working back in the secular world full time again, and
there's one other part time IT person who is here sometimes, but mainly
I'm running things. The other person wants to install Deep Freeze
<http://www.faronics.com/html/Deepfreeze.asp> in hopes that we can
automate our IT infrastructure here when I'm gone. I don't think that's
really possible or smart, because things go wrong, people need software,
etc... What are your thoughts on this? Do you think there is a strong
argument for needing someone to run things in IT? Or do you think his
proposal of automating IT is realistic???
