This is way outside of the scope of what you actually requested, but the phone systems we sell (at least the brand-spankin'-newest version of the software) include an IM server that integrates in with the phone system. Obviously replacing your phone system just to add IM would be a bit of a stretch unless you were already planning on it, but this is a feature that a lot of phone systems have added recently, you may want to check and see if yours supports something like this with a license add-in. Some of them integrate IM capability with the software client users are already using to manage their phone anyway, so you don't even have to install additional software.

I have a key user that wants to implement IM. However, I don't want to bring in a "free" service because of what I think is the security risk. Am I justified in my security concern? I was thinking the best way is to implement something internal to my LAN. What do you all think?
