[itdiscuss] Certifications?

I've often considered that I would want certification but not because of the value they might bring but because of the perspectives they may offer. Most of my training is OJT which means that my fingers are dirty in the bits most of the time. I like it that way. Because of that my techniques might be unorthodox (i.e. not the way MS might do it). Sometimes that gives me a perspective on the way we do things here which might be superior in our application but not necessarily in a different environment (i.e. corporate).

Also, from time to time, I've hired contract labor or consultants with letter codes following their name and have been disappointed with the practical application of what they might have learned. It too often seems that the practical application of the certification is not quite there. Of course, there are time when I'm thoroughly put in my place by someone with those letters.

So, as you can see below, I currently have no letters following my name but it seems that it would be nice to have some.

BTW if I were looking for a corporate job I believe the person doing the hiring would be impressed with the letters.

Jeffrey,

I'm not going to tell you what certs I think are worthwhile (I'm working on 70-431 myself). However, I really like what my friend Brent wrote about certifications a while back. To summarize, experience is cake; certifications are the icing.
