[itdiscuss] Certifications?

I used to hire for Comcast - helping run their cable modem division.
HR would always send me folks that had certifications.

Some would say - " You will like this guy - he has his MCP and
everything!"

The hired help normally were the ones who could answer this question
without us spending any cash.

I have 3 offices all with a great internet connection- one in
Philadelphia, one in BrynMayr and one in Cherry Hill - I need to
connect them together how do you suggest we do this..."

The Microsoft Guy would suggest a Microsoft solution - his MCSD/MCSE
was worthless to me unless I spent thousands...
The CCNA would say - ah - you can do that using a great cisco solution
- again worthless to me unless I spent thousands...
The BSD guy and Linux girl said "well - do you have a computer we can
use at each location - if so I can setup a VPN at no cost for you..."

Funny - none of the BSD / Linux folks had certs .... but they landed
the job.

Certifications are great - but many come from boot camps... On the
Job and school of hard knocks has its value for sure...
What I do like best about guys w/ degrees however is - they have a
different way of looking at solutions - more tried and true...

there is value in both...
