[itdiscuss] Upgrading XP Home

That is OEM -OR- retail box license. I'm still trying to figure out how
my rep can sell me an OEM license when I'm not an OEM vendor. That is
what has been proposed. I'm not comfortable with it.

Hi Ken,
Unfortunately yes, any home OS will require the OEM license rather than
the charity license. This is only the case for Home OS, if a user has a
Business OS then they can do your normal licensing process.

Hope this helps,
Sean H.

I was on the phone with my CDW charity rep just moments ago and he told
me that I'd have to purchase an OEM license to upgrade from Home before
I could get the Open License SKUs. That is consistent with my
conversations with Microsoft Sales and their online documentation.

Yes, I think it was an upgrade option. We do our purchasing through CDW
and I'm pretty sure this option included the option to upgrade systems.

But... that is not an upgrade option from Windows XP Home Edition.

The non-profit price for Windows 7 Enterprise (the OS Mission to the
World uses because of added security features like whole disk encryption
via bitlocker) costs us around $60 for the non-software assurance
version and about $100 to add the software assurance features.

We purchased some Asus Eee Top touch screen machines that came with
Windows XP Home Edition Nettop. I need to have these machines on the
domain and, therefore, need a Professional or higher license. (Business
appears to be available only on new computer purchases.)

I've been told that I can purchase Windows 7 Professional upgrade
package for $199.99 (SKU: FQC-00130).

Would anyone like to propose alternatives?
