[itdiscuss] Phone/Data vendors

I agree.. get the rates but you can usually bypass the middle man. We
actually looked at Nuvox as they had a better price. I was able to work
AT&T down below that price once I showed them the Nuvox offer and reminded
them that Nuvox was just leasing their lines. Customer service for a lot of
these companies seems to be different across the nation. My experience tells
me that its all based on your sales rep.. if I have issues, I call him and
since its his commission, everything works better. Just a little food for
thought.

Speakeasy almost always is reselling someone else's fiber.

So they mark it up a little

For metro-ethernet generally there are 1 maybe 2 that actually service your
community - the rest lease the line.

So - get the rates - from all and then shop them hard.

Our experience with nuvox (several years ago) wasn't stellar, we
switched to paetec, and then this past summer moved over to TW telecom.
TW won hands-down on technology.

We use a company called Paetec, but they have no local support staff. We
are switching to a company called Nuvox that I have been impressed with.
Until we make the cutover I can't give you any facts about their
service, but I have heard very good things about them. I looked at
CBeyond and they were a close second IMO to Nuvox.

CBeyond is still active in the Atlanta area, and they give excellent
service.

You can contact Sloan Gavin - His cell # is: (678) 577-7680.

He is a Sales Manager and so has more flexibility in dealing with his
customers (pricewise), than does the average sales rep over there.

We have been using DNSMadeEasy dot com for all our dns needs,

including

reverse pointing. It is easy to set up, and easy to manage. We had the

same

issue 2 years ago when we moved our email service in-house. Once we

set up

dns with them, it took about 2 hours to propagate through the

internet, and

we were golden. If I make a change to any of our settings now, it

takes

about 20 minutes to update dns through the internet!

At my previous employer we had the same exact problem with our service

provider and the way we overcame it was to move all of our DNS

services

to EasyDNS. They provided the PTR records as well as all of the

standard DNS services. The other advantage is that anything to do with

DNS was handled by one company and it wasn't dependent on any service

provider. So if we found a service provider that offered better

services for a better price we could move to them without worrying

about

who would handle pieces and parts of our DNS needs. If EasyDNS

provides

such services, I'd be willing to bet there are others as well.

The "owner" of the IP address (ATT) is the master of the reverse DNS.

If

they won't change it doesn't matter what a 3rd party DNS service is

set

to.

Say bye bye to AT-T if possible. We moved off of them long ago as well

as I've moved 2 clients off of AT-T. In Chattanooga Comcast is a

surprisingly great service to go with for small business, but for more

demanding needs our power utility (EPB) offers fiber internet.

I don't know where you are, but in the past when I lived in Atlanta I

moved my company there to Cbeyond communications from AT-T (both data

and phone). It was a great move. I can't speak to Cbeyond's reputation

now (that was over 5 years ago) but check them out if they are in your

area.

If I recall I went with the Beyond Voice package.

Thanks for the feedback. That's what I expected too but was told "no."

How long ago was your exchange with them? This could be new policy.

Lots of frustrated folks on the 'net about this but I just can't move

this domain to ATT in the middle of the week. I shouldn't have to

anyway...like they are holding me hostage.

I don't know about the specific IP Flex service but I've had AT&T do a

reverse DNS entry for us in the past to our mail server for the

church.

We have Domain registration with Network Solutions, Web hosting on a

different provider and our reverse dns entry from AT&T (Bellsouth is

who

has it listed).

All I had to do was send an email to an address that AT&T gave me and

they made the dns change.

So we recently moved 100% of our Internet services to AT&T "IP Flex"

service. We're having an issue with Reverse DNS when trying to send

emails to some domains that do the rDNS lookup on each message because

we don't have it in place.

I've tried SPF, TXT, SRV, etc. - no dice.

Domain registrar is currently Network Solutions.

AT&T won't create a PTR record for me pointing back to my mail server

unless they "host" the domain for me, which I don't want to do for

multiple reasons, including the downtime that such a move would incur.

What can I do? Is a SmartHost an option? I'm not familiar with them

but am desparate now and ATT is not being at all flexible.
