For Comcast, contact Business Class Technical Support, and tell them you
want to set up your reverse dns. This is how I got my setup going, after
several tries calling regular customer support.
- 24/7 Technical Support: Call (800) 391-3000

Does anyone have a similar contact for network engineers at Comcast for
delegating or setting up reverse DNS? I've always been told by Comcast that
this isn't possible, but was wondering if it would be if we bypassed their
customer support.

On vendor bashing...
Great call, Lou. FWIW, until our recent building move and the 3+ months to
get a T1 loop in (yes, really) it all started downhill from there. AT&T
served us EXTREMELY WELL for about 6 years prior to this issue. Aggressive
pricing, fast turn-arounds on new orders and trouble tickets, proactive
sales support, the Whole Nine. They did drop the ball here though (it
happens) and you haven't heard the whole story either. However, in this
case I did lead the charge of ATT bashing (I forget that this listserv is
public), and as also tends to happen, people most often speak of the bad
situations to warn their friends so they don't go through the agony that
they went through *whenever*. Those bad times just seem to be stickier than
the good/correct times. I'm a big writer of positive response cards when I
can as I've seen that people really do read them and they really can
translate to good things for the employee that went out of his/her way to
help me
out or get me hot fries or whatever. Conversely, when some knucklehead
cuts some old lady off in traffic and gives her the finger that has a "How's
My Driving?" bumpersticker...well, they nice, accurate, calm telephone call
to log the indicent (those things matter too!).
So, at the end of the day AT&T fixed the issues and we're rolling again.
However, I'm now scrambling/fighting to keep my job over this,
literally...and that's no fun, but after years of mail flowing without
little more than a mention of anything other than "PLEASE ARCHIVE(!)" and
all of the freebie services out there such as Gmail and Yahoo and such,
email should just work, and when it doesn't, a) it must be a simple issue to
fix 'if the Internet is working,' and b) anyone that cannot fix it in an
hour or less must be incompetent. Or that's been my expierience anyway.
And it sucks.
To wrap this (third?) novella up, The most valuable bits of info I learned
from this process relate to my co-workers. I already knew that IT-Discuss
was solid(!), but it was interesting to see internally who was supporting me
and who was cursing me and doing the "Maybe we need to hire someone to help
you do your job?" Yes I got that email from an Exec, and yes, it felt
GREAT!!! Ohhhh yeah. Kick 'em while they're down...HARD!
Thanks for keeping us straight, Lou. You're right on. What we really need
are more stories of GOOD, which I think Tony Dye blogged on a while back?

I've been lurking this thread and am happy to hear that your issue
is resolved, James, and was sorry to read that your experience with AT&T
was so negative.
This said, I believe its in the best interest of the group that
"bashing" of a given vendor or brand (Apple vs Microsoft
anyone?:) be kept to a minimum or avoided entirely if possible.
Healthy discussion/debate is one thing, but lumping generalizations is
another. One person's negative experience might be another person's
positive experience.
I appreciate the integrity of this group and the fact that we all
aspire to a higher model.

Thanks
to everyone that participated in this talk and for helping me out, providing
info and insight. I learned "stuff" about DNS in general and
learned some cool little bit along the way as well, and even learned a lot
about my cruddy ISP, AT&T, who has been nothing but a giant headache since
Day One (I already knew that they were cruddy but it's good to know that
they
are equally cruddy and other people have experienced trouble with them, as
backward as that is). That's a good thing too. If we weren't locked
HARD into contracts with them (before my time) I would have cut and run long
ago. The clock is ticking though!
ATT agreed (or a cool engineer did anyway...not the red-tape-pushers that
don't
know DNS from a hole in the ground) to the delegation and we got our PTR
Record
in place and we are again sending mail to those folks that do rDNS on
inbound
mail. So, we're back in business, everything is fixed and running
smoothly, and youse
guys/gals have again proven that IT Discuss IS THE BEST! A
simple question posted yesterday and within 24 hours not only are we
"fixed," but I've learned a great deal as well, and I even (get this)
ENJOYED MYSELF and the responses were as much entertainment as they were
informational. But as we techies all know, often/usually these are one in
the same.

While they still maintain control of the IP address space registered with
ARIN, ATT does have the ability to delegate reverse DNS resolution to their
customers. They have delegated multiple class C address spaces that we
use
to us and we use DNS Made Easy for reverse resolution. It works
flawlessly.
Inexpensive and customer service is always great, plus they have a global
Anycast network providing 100% uptime SLA.
Of course, getting ATT to make the delegation may be easier said than done
in
your area too ... :)

PTR is the reverse pointer for an IP Address.
If ARIN has assigned the IP of 1.1.1.1 to AT&T (place the appropriate ip of
course in place) then the only organization that can set PTR is AT&T.
PERIOD
What you can do however is create a smtp server using EasyDNS or other
services and then have your outgoing mail actually tunneled through their ip
- which they in turn control the PTR for.
I would suggest however - calling AT&T directly
Dial 1-888-613-6330, Prompt 3, then 1.
ATT also has their online provisioning tool here

At my previous employer we had the same exact problem with our service
provider and the way we overcame it was to move all of our DNS services to
EasyDNS. They provided the PTR records as well as all of the standard DNS
services. The other advantage is that anything to do with DNS was handled
by
one company and it wasn't dependent on any service provider. So if we
found
a service provider that offered better services for a better price we could
move to them without worrying about who would handle pieces and parts of our
DNS needs. If EasyDNS provides such services, I'd be willing to bet there
are others as well.

The "owner" of the IP address (ATT) is the master of the reverse DNS.
If they
won't change it doesn't matter what a 3rd party DNS service is set to.
Say bye bye to AT-T if possible. We moved off of them long ago as well as
I've moved 2 clients off of AT-T. In Chattanooga Comcast is a surprisingly
great service to go with for small business, but for more demanding needs
our
power utility (EPB) offers fiber internet.
I don't know where you are, but in the past when I lived in Atlanta I moved
my company there to Cbeyond communications from AT-T (both data and phone).
It was a great move. I can't speak to Cbeyond's reputation now (that was
over
5 years ago) but check them out if they are in your area.
If I recall I went with the Beyond Voice package.

I don't know about the specific IP Flex service but I've had AT&T do a
reverse DNS entry for us in the past to our mail server for the church.
We
have Domain registration with Network Solutions, Web hosting on a different
provider and our reverse dns entry from AT&T (Bellsouth is who has it
listed).
All I had to do was send an email to an address that AT&T gave me and they
made the dns change.

So we recently moved 100% of our Internet services to AT&T "IP
Flex" service.
We're having an issue with Reverse DNS when trying to send emails to some
domains that do the rDNS lookup on each message because we don't have it in
place.
I've tried SPF, TXT, SRV, etc. - no dice.
Domain registrar is currently Network Solutions.
AT&T won't create a PTR record for me pointing back to my mail server
unless
they "host" the domain for me, which I don't want to do for multiple
reasons,
including the downtime that such a move would incur.
What can I do? Is a SmartHost an option? I'm not familiar with them
but am
desparate now and ATT is not being at all flexible.
